About KQED:
KQED is a public media organization serving Northern California. Their mission is to provide citizens with knowledge for informed decision-making, foster community dialogue, bring the arts to everyone, and engage audiences in sharing their stories. They also support students and teachers and offer journeys of exploration to diverse audiences. They require employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. This internship will be based in KQED’s newly renovated headquarters and will involve field work.
Job Description: Visual Journalism Intern
This is a paid internship ($19.18/hour) working 16 hours per week from July 7th, 2025, to December 19th, 2025.
The Visual Journalism Intern will shoot and edit photography and/or video to accompany news stories for KQED.org and other engagement platforms. Key responsibilities include:
• Collaborating with reporters and editors across various departments (News, Science, and Arts) to produce engaging visual journalism.
• Shooting and editing photos and/or videos, both independently and alongside reporters.
• Interacting with community members and organizations in the Bay Area.
• Collaborating with newsroom colleagues to brainstorm and implement new ideas for visual journalism across multiple KQED platforms.
• Attending weekly digital team meetings.
• Pitching and filing at least one in-depth visual story during the internship.
The internship prioritizes sharpening visual skills and instincts, and fostering collaboration within a newsroom environment.
Required Knowledge/Experience:
• Knowledge of photography and a strong visual storytelling sense.
• Strong written and/or oral communication skills.
• Strong news sense and ability to generate creative story ideas.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
• Familiarity with DSLRs and other visual production equipment.
• Experience editing photos (Adobe experience is a plus).
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
Desired Knowledge/Experience:
• Passion for centering and supporting communities in telling their own stories.
• Familiarity or strong interest in using video production equipment and editing video.
• Strong interest in public media.
