Job Description: Communications and Community Outreach/Advocacy Intern (AARP Ohio)
The AARP Ohio Team seeks a motivated intern to support its communications, marketing, public relations, volunteer recruitment/engagement, and statewide event planning. This is a paid internship offering hands-on experience in a fast-paced environment. The intern will contribute to initiatives across various channels (social media, email, web) and develop/implement a community-based strategy to connect Ohioans 50+ with AARP’s social impact programming.
Responsibilities include:
• Creating videos, social media posts, and other digital content for advocacy campaigns (family caregiving, fraud prevention, retirement security).
• Promoting local AARP community engagement events via email, social media, and earned media.
• Assisting in grassroots organizing and advocacy efforts focused on AARP Ohio’s “livable communities” work (housing, transportation, outdoor spaces and buildings).
• Representing AARP at community events (AARP-hosted, sponsored events, public meetings, community gatherings).
• Collaborating with staff and volunteers to build strong volunteer teams and identify local projects to enhance AARP’s community presence.
Qualifications:
• Currently pursuing (or recently graduated from) a degree in communications, business, marketing, journalism, or a related field. Rising undergraduate juniors/seniors, graduate students, or post-doctoral students are eligible.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency in Excel, Microsoft Teams, Canva, Adobe, and PowerPoint. Must be a self-starter and adaptable, able to manage tight deadlines.
• Ability to adhere to AARP branding guidelines. Working knowledge of AP Style is preferred.
• Experience in event planning and volunteer engagement.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks effectively.
• Ability to work well with diverse populations.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
• Familiarity with video creation/editing and multiple social media platforms is a plus.

• Hybrid work environment (remote work on Mondays and Fridays, except for essential functions; remote work limited to the US and its territories).
Compensation and Benefits:
• hourly rate: $18 (undergraduates), $21 (graduate students), $28 (Ph.D. candidates).
• Interns are non-exempt and ineligible for employee benefits.
