Job Description: Engineering Intern
This is an entry-level position for an engineering intern working under the supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.). The intern will be part of a project team and contribute to infrastructure design across various sectors, including:
• Transportation: Roadways, bridges, etc.
• Water Resources: Water management systems, drainage, etc.
• Environmental: Projects with environmental considerations.
• Survey: Land surveying and mapping.
• Residential and Commercial Land Development: Site design for housing and commercial projects.
Responsibilities:
The intern will assist the project manager with a variety of tasks, including:
• Project Planning & Cost Estimation: Assisting in the creation of project plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
• Design Development: Developing feasible design alternatives, comparing design parameters (typical sections, horizontal and vertical alignments, right-of-way requirements, and cost), and identifying key design features to meet project needs.
• Software Utilization: Utilizing computer-aided engineering and design (CAED) software (specifically AutoCAD Civil 3D, and ideally InfoWorks®) to create engineering and design documents.
• Technical Writing: Preparing written technical reports and engineering studies adhering to company standards.
• Fieldwork: Participating in site visits, assisting with field tests and construction observation, and creating as-built drawings.
• Support Tasks: Performing tasks such as redlining documents, assisting with submittals, preparing exhibits, and potentially contributing to design work based on experience level.
Qualifications:
• Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil or Agricultural Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university.
• Prior experience in civil design through internships is preferred but not required.
• Familiarity with engineering principles, techniques, and procedures.
• Strong interpersonal skills to maintain effective working relationships.
• Ability to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, MS Word, and MS Excel. Familiarity with InfoWorks® is a plus.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Availability to work Monday-Friday, 8 am to 5 pm, with occasional overtime.
