The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law is a leading national racial justice legal organization established in 1963 at the request of President John F. Kennedy. They utilize legal advocacy to achieve racial justice, working both inside and outside the courts to ensure Black people and other people of color have equal voice, opportunity, and power.

Job Description: Spring Legal Intern

Location: Washington, DC

Job Type: Part-time or Full-time

Term: January 27, 2024 – April 25, 2025

About the Role: The Lawyers’ Committee offers legal internships to support their racial justice work. Interns contribute to impactful projects while gaining professional and personal development. The organization’s departments include Digital Justice, Economic Justice, Fair Housing, Educational Opportunities, Public Policy, and Criminal Justice. A $500 stipend is provided.

Hours:

Part-time: 10-15 hours/week (Spring semester, full course load); 20 hours/week (Spring semester, without full course load).
Full-time: 37.5 hours/week.
Location: Work can be done remotely or in the Washington, DC office.

Responsibilities: Daily tasks vary by department but generally include:

Conducting legal research.
Assisting in drafting legal documents.
Organizing case files/maintaining documents.
Communicating with clients (under attorney supervision).
Analyzing legal issues and providing summaries/recommendations.
Providing administrative support to attorneys.
Assisting in reviewing and summarizing legal documents.

Ideal Candidate: Currently enrolled law school students who can work independently, possess excellent research and writing skills, and demonstrate an interest in public service, government/congressional affairs, and public policy. A passion for civil rights is essential. Preference may be given to students in or around the D.C. metropolitan area, but the Lawyers’ Committee welcomes externship and exchange program participants.
