About the Job: Legal Internship

Gusto’s Legal & Compliance (L&C) team seeks a proactive and detail-oriented 1L law student for a 12-week hybrid summer internship. This role offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in various legal areas within a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Responsibilities:

Conducting in-depth legal research: This involves exploring a wide range of topics, including Privacy & AI, advertising regulations, intellectual property, commercial transactions, employment law, international law, public policy, corporate governance, insurance, and financial services.
Providing legal guidance: The intern will offer legal insights to cross-functional teams, including Business, Product, Marketing, Operations, Security, and Engineering, based on their research findings.
Collaborating with Product and Commercial Counsel: This includes assisting Product Counsel in interpreting and applying legal requirements to product development, and working with Commercial Counsel to negotiate and revise vendor and partnership agreements.
Documenting guidance and creating trainings: The intern will be responsible for preparing comprehensive legal guidelines and training materials for company-wide use.

Qualifications:

• Must be a current 1L student at an accredited law school.
Strong legal writing and analytical skills are essential, along with the ability to communicate effectively with non-legal audiences.
• Proven experience in researching and synthesizing complex legal topics.
Highly organized with meticulous attention to detail.
• Demonstrated enjoyment of collaborating within cross-functional teams.
• A proactive attitude toward learning and exploring new disciplines, coupled with strong critical thinking skills and the ability to develop innovative solutions.
• The internship is a hybrid role, requiring a minimum of two days per week in the San Francisco, New York, or Denver office (candidates must be based in these locations; relocation assistance is not provided).

Bonus Points:

• Prior work experience, particularly in a startup or tech company setting.
• Demonstrated interest in fintech, privacy, employment, health, tax, payroll, benefits, and/or insurance industries.

Compensation:

The hourly rate is targeted at $38.00/hour in Denver and most major metro areas, and $45.00/hour for San Francisco and New York. The final offer will depend on various factors, including location, experience, and expertise.
