Job Description:
This Industrial Design Internship is within the Character Programs & Development Digital Design team. The intern will collaborate with Digital Sculptors, Materials Teams, and production partners/vendors. A key responsibility is informing production capabilities, limitations, and potential cost impacts related to design, production, and technology choices. The intern will build production-ready digital assets, technical drawings, and specifications for various products used to bring characters to life across all Disney Parks, Resorts, and Cruise Ships globally.
Responsibilities:
• Building and communicating design concepts proficiently through 3D design software, emphasizing complex CAD surface modeling and design.
• Creating physical prototypes/mockups, demonstrating a strong understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, and product development methodologies.
• Demonstrating an effective understanding of the relationship between aesthetics/function and ergonomics, human factors, and user experience.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
• Proficiency in building/communicating design concepts using 3D design software, showcasing innovative and creative design solutions.
• Strong emphasis on complex CAD surface modeling and design.
• Ability to create physical prototypes/mockups.
• Knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, and product development methodologies.
• Understanding of the relationship between aesthetics/function and ergonomics, human factors, and user experience.
• A portfolio showcasing successful and diverse design work, with evidence of high proficiency in 3D CAD design software (link required on resume).
• Enrollment in an accredited college/university (or recent graduate within 6 months of application).
• Junior, senior, recent graduate, or graduate student status in Industrial Design, Product Design, Toy Design, Themed Entertainment Design, Animatronics, or Mechanical Engineering.
• At least 18 years of age.
• Unrestricted work authorization.
• No prior Disney internship/program exceeding one year of continuous employment.
• Availability for full-time work (approximately 40 hours per week).
• Ability to secure housing in Orlando, FL and have reliable transportation.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., Solidworks, Autodesk Fusion360, Rhino).
• Passion for 3D printing, model making, toy design, 3D scanning, costume design, prop making, etc.
• Experience with digital sculpting tools (e.g., Zbrush, Blender, Maya).
• Collaborative problem-solving skills and ability to work with cross-functional teams.
