With approximately 3300 employees (end 2022) and a global headquarters in Venlo, Netherlands, Canon Production Printing operates across three continents.
Job Description: Color Management Research Internship
This internship presents a unique opportunity to apply mathematical knowledge to real-world problems in the field of color management for production printing.
Problem: Achieving color consistency when printing on different substrates is a key challenge in production printing. While ink and substrate interaction plays a crucial role in color appearance, applying the same ink combination and amounts to different substrates often results in varying colors.
Goal: To achieve color consistency across different substrates, the ink amounts need to be adjusted. This requires understanding the relationship between CMYK ink amounts and the resulting color, which is typically expressed as spectral reflectance (measuring the amount of reflected light at different wavelengths).
Your Task:
• Investigate the behavior of spectral reflectance in relation to CMYK tone values. This involves analyzing how spectral reflectance data changes with varying CMYK ink amounts.
• Explore and develop alternative linearization strategies for spectral reflectance data. Traditional methods involve applying the negative logarithm to obtain spectral density, which offers limited linearity. This internship aims to find more optimal linearization approaches.
• Use your mathematical skills (numerical linear algebra, scientific computing, statistics, data science) to analyze spectral reflectance data and develop algorithms for linearization and interpolation.
Requirements:
• Master’s level student in (applied) mathematics
• Proficiency in prototyping languages (Matlab or Python)
• Academic writing skills in English
• Ability to consult and critically analyze scientific literature
• Independent work ethic
Benefits:
• Challenging assignment with skilled coaching
• Internship/Graduation compensation of €500,- per month
• Travel cost compensation (if no ‘OV-weekcard’)
• Networking opportunities with professionals in various disciplines
Company Culture: Canon Production Printing values collaboration, innovation, and ownership, fostering an environment where employees are empowered to excel and push boundaries.
