Mining Engineer Internship – Summer 2025
This internship offers real-world experience and the opportunity to learn from industry experts. You will work at either the Lansing, NY or Cleveland, OH underground salt mine locations, as part of the Cargill Protein and Salt (CPS) business unit.
Your responsibilities will include:
• Working within a fast-paced, underground environment
• Learning leadership skills through leading production or maintenance employees, project teams, contractors, or technical operations teams
• Gaining exposure to the people management and technical components of the mining industry
• Developing technical and management skills through hands-on experience
Potential career paths within Cargill after the internship:
• Mining Engineers: Work both underground and on the surface, supporting infrastructure and bringing road deicing salt to customers. Learn mining techniques like surveying, mapping, room and pillar mining operations, mineral processing, water management, materials handling, and mining safety best practices.
• Electrical Engineers: Gain experience with high voltage power infrastructure, programming, and control systems. Work on automating equipment, maintaining production and communications in a unique environment, and implementing best practices for maintenance and design.
• Production Management Engineers: Lead people, process, and input/product in a mining environment. Directly supervise operators and production activities, participating in daily production management meetings. Understand and handle all aspects of MSHA federal regulations and compliance programs.
• Process/Project Engineering: Develop business cases, select vendors, manage budgets, and oversee projects related to process optimization, safety, quality, infrastructure, and energy use. Involved in innovation processes, idea generation systems, and reliability-centered design.
Internship details:
• Duration: 12 weeks
• Location: Lansing, NY or Cleveland, OH
• Compensation: $25.00 – $34.70 per hour (depending on graduation date and eligibility for full-time employment)

Responsibilities:
• Working in an underground environment
• Designing and upgrading current systems
• Reviewing and updating plant drawings
• Physical activity involving bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 50 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds

Required Qualifications:
• Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or a Mining Engineering (MinE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Electrical Engineering (EE), Industrial Engineering (IE), or other related engineering discipline.
• Bachelor’s/master’s degree to be/recently completed between December 2025 – May 2028.
• Right to work in the U.S. (not based solely on a student visa or a third-party employer-sponsored visa).
• Proven ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
• Geographically flexible and willing to relocate to either Cleveland, OH or Lansing, NY.
• Able to complete a 12-week internship in Summer 2025 (May/June – August 2025).
• Must possess a high degree of initiative and resourcefulness in completing work with limited guidance.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Sophomores, juniors, or seniors currently enrolled in an accredited engineering program in a relevant field.
• Mining or heavy industrial co-op, or internship experience.
• Overall 2.7 GPA.
• Ability to relate technical knowledge to job-related duties.
• Demonstrated ability to solve problems and make decisions independently.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Leadership experience.
