Staff Accountant – Real Estate Team | ReminderMedia
The Tone:
This is a full-time, on-site role for Acree Brothers Realty Team, located in Lynchburg, VA. Acree Brothers Realty Team, supported by ReminderMedia, is a prominent Lynchburg-based real estate team founded on the belief that real estate transactions are deeply personal experiences for families and individuals. The team helps clients find clarity in a complex process and confidence in their choices, supporting buyers and sellers across multiple Virginia counties. With almost 20 team members, including agents, coordinators, and support staff, the team deeply understands the local communities. This position represents the team’s first dedicated accounting hire, essential for owning and managing the financial record-keeping for both the growing real estate operations and its affiliated rental property portfolio with the same meticulous care given to client work.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Accounts Payable Management: Process all vendor invoices for brokerage operations and property-related expenses, accurately coding them to the correct entity, property, and general ledger account, distinguishing between capitalizable improvements and deductible repairs.
• Rental Operations Accounting: Record all rental income and tenant payments, meticulously track and reconcile tenant balances, manage partial payments, late fees, and delinquencies, and maintain security deposit records according to Virginia law.
• Financial Reconciliation & Close Support: Reconcile all operating bank accounts monthly for Owner review, prepare and post recurring journal entries, and assist with the month-end close process, including account analysis and supporting schedules, while maintaining organized, audit-ready documentation.
• Process Development & Standardization: Take the lead in building and documenting new accounting procedures, tightening the financial close cycle, and establishing robust record-keeping standards for all future financial operations.
• Reporting and Advisory: Prepare recurring financial reports for Owner review, clearly explaining account activity and variances to agents, brokers, and property staff who may not have a financial background, and support ad hoc analysis and special projects.
The Must-Haves
• Background: A formal accounting foundation demonstrated by a degree in Accounting or Finance, an accounting certificate, completed coursework, or documented full-cycle bookkeeping experience.
• Experience: 0-3 years of accounting or bookkeeping experience, welcoming new graduates and career changers who have relevant coursework strongly encouraged to apply.
• Skills: Working proficiency in Excel, including effective use of formulas, sorting, filtering, and pivot tables; demonstrated accuracy with numerical detail and the discipline to reconcile to zero; the ability to maintain separate, accurate records across multiple legal entities; and the capacity to clearly explain financial information to non-financial audiences.
• Bonus: Experience with QuickBooks or property management accounting software (such as AppFolio, Buildium, Rent Manager, or Yardi), any prior exposure to real estate accounting including trust or escrow accounting or tenant ledgers, prior responsibility for cash handling or reconciliation, or active progress toward the CPA exam or CPA eligibility coursework.
