Tax Accountant | Kemper
The Tone:
This is a hybrid role at Kemper, located in Chicago, IL. Kemper is an insurance company, and this role contributes to ensuring compliance with applicable tax rules and financial reporting standards. The Tax Accountant plays a key part in preparing, filing, analyzing, and accounting for various State and Local tax filings, helping to optimize the company’s tax position across many jurisdictions.

• Mission: Prepares, files, analyzes, and accounts for various State and Local tax filings to ensure compliance with tax rules and optimize the company’s tax position.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Tax Compliance: Prepare and file various State and Local tax filings, including premium taxes, municipal taxes, guaranty fund assessments, use taxes, and property taxes.
• Tax Analysis: Analyze the tax and financial statement implications of business activities and provide recommendations to optimize tax outcomes.
• Financial Operations: Prepare journal entries, perform account reconciliations, and process state and local tax payments.
• Research & Communication: Conduct tax research using available information services and technology, and communicate with internal and external stakeholders on tax matters.
• Process Improvement: Participate in initiatives to improve efficiency, strengthen controls, and enhance documentation of tax processes.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, with core knowledge in corporate tax or public accounting tax practices.
• Experience: 1-2 years of relevant experience. Experience with State and Local Taxes is required.
• Skills: Strong working knowledge of Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Ability to manage deadlines and work independently. Experience analyzing tax law and/or accounting guidance. Good verbal communication and technical writing abilities.
• Bonus: Experience with insurance company taxation. Experience with cloud-based ERP environments, preferably Workday. Familiarity or strong interest in process improvement and documentation. Experience with Alteryx and/or Power BI.
