The Tone:
This is an internship opportunity with Doeren Mayhew, recognized as the 36th largest CPA and advisory firm in the industry. The firm provides comprehensive accounting and advisory services to a diverse client base. Interns will gain invaluable real-world accounting experience, applying classroom knowledge in a professional setting before they complete their academic studies. This hands-on program is designed to immerse individuals in the firm’s operations, allowing them to work closely alongside seasoned professionals and develop the skills needed to navigate and even challenge established accounting and business norms. This role is crucial for fostering the next generation of accounting talent, offering a foundational experience in public accounting.

The TL;DR
• Role: Internship
• Type: Seasonal (January 2027 until no later than April 16, 2027; typically 25-40 hours per week, including Saturdays)
• Team: Interns can choose between the Corporate Audit or Domestic Tax service groups, collaborating closely with Principals, Managers, Associates, and other interns.
• Mission: To provide practical, hands-on experience similar to that of first-year associates, enabling interns to understand and apply audit or tax procedures and software within a leading public accounting firm.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Client Engagement Management: Actively participate on numerous engagement teams alongside various audit or tax Principals, Managers, Associates, and other interns to complete audits, reviews, and compilations, or prepare an array of tax returns for diverse clients.
• Financial Information Analysis: Compile and meticulously analyze financial information, accurately testing and documenting business transactions according to professional standards.
• Industry and Client Exposure: Gain significant exposure to between 8-12 client engagements (for audit interns) or a wide variety of tax returns across numerous industries, including manufacturing, construction, non-profit, auto dealership, retail, and hospitality.
• Software Proficiency: Undergo hands-on training during the initial two weeks to learn and effectively utilize audit or tax software programs, applying them to real client engagements.
• Professional Document Preparation: Prepare and review financial statements (for audit interns) or assist with the preparation of various corporate and individual tax returns, including personal property, partnerships, C-Corp, and S-Corp returns (for tax interns). Additionally, conduct tax research and work on tax projections using compiled client information.

The Must-Haves
• Background: This is an Entry-Level position specifically for individuals actively pursuing either a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Accounting.
• Experience: While no specific years of prior experience are mandated, candidates are preferred to have completed at least one intermediate accounting course by Spring 2027. Work experience, whether directly related to accounting or not, is also preferred.
• Skills: Candidates must maintain a strong academic record, demonstrated by a 3.0 GPA (both cumulative and within their accounting major). Essential skills include a strong drive and clear motivation to pursue a career in public accounting, excellent oral and written communication abilities, and proven time management skills to manage multiple responsibilities effectively.
• Bonus: A high degree of curiosity, a strong willingness to learn, and enthusiasm for the field are highly valued. Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to take initiative, evidenced through prior work experience or extracurricular activities, will also be a significant advantage.
