TRD Fall Commercial Intern | Toyota North America
The Tone:
This is a part-time internship at Toyota North America, located in Costa Mesa, CA. Toyota Racing Development (TRD) inspires racing fans by advancing automotive engineering and maximizing racetrack success. This Commercial Intern position plays an integral role in supporting TRD’s Commercial Operations team by providing essential financial, budget, and data analysis, which directly contributes to informed business decisions and the team’s overall success in the motorsports and automotive industry.

• Mission: This intern will provide analytical support for recurring reporting cycles and ad hoc business decisions while working directly with Commercial Operations and cross-functional partners.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Budget Tracking: Support comprehensive budget tracking and variance analysis, actively monitoring spending against the established plan and promptly flagging any significant deviations.
• Cost Reporting: Prepare detailed cost reports and provide assistance with crucial cost-per-unit, program cost, and expense roll-up analyses for various initiatives.
• Financial Reporting: Build and meticulously maintain recurring financial and commercial reports, ensuring they are accurate and ready for leadership review.
• Data Analysis: Pull, clean, and systematically reconcile data from both internal systems and various third-party sources, then perform in-depth analysis to identify key trends, drivers, and opportunities across commercial metrics.
• Business Research: Conduct thorough business research on current market trends, competitive activity within the industry, and relevant industry benchmarks to inform strategic insights.
• Process Improvement: Document and actively work to improve repeatable processes, including the creation of templates, report automation, and defining clear data definitions for enhanced efficiency.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program, with a preference for students studying Finance, Accounting, Business, Economics, or Analytics. This is an entry-level role designed for a rising junior or senior student.
• Experience: Requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
• Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, encompassing pivot tables, lookup functions, and basic financial modeling. Proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint for presentation preparation. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the capability to effectively present information to a small group. Demonstrated detail-oriented and organized approach, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines effectively and with limited supervision.
• Bonus: Exposure to data analytics tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or SQL is considered a plus. Must be located in California and available to work 24 hours per week on-site during the academic year.
