Safety Specialist | Kiewit

The Tone:
This is a full-time, entry-level role at Kiewit, located in various project locations across the country. Kiewit Building Group specializes in constructing a wide range of facilities including office buildings, industrial complexes, educational and sports facilities, hotels, hospitals, and more, offering general construction, construction management, and design-build services. This role is crucial for reinforcing Kiewit’s guiding principle of “Nobody Gets Hurt” by creating, supporting, and auditing safety programs, implementing site-specific safety plans, and ensuring all work is executed safely and in compliance with regulations.

• Mission: Owns the successful implementation and support of the Site Specific Safety Plan in the field, reinforcing Kiewit’s commitment to safety and ensuring compliance.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Develop and Communicate Safety Plans: Assist in the development, review, updating, and comprehensive communication of the Site Specific Safety Plan (SSSP) to all project personnel, including subcontractors.
• Enforce Safety Protocols: Exercise Stop Work Responsibility to ensure strict adherence to company policies, regulations, work plans, work packs, and detailed work plans on site.
• Promote Safety Ownership: Collaborate daily with craft employees in the field to foster buy-in and support craft ownership of the safety program.
• Conduct Hazard Inspections: Complete daily documented hazard inspections and provide assistance to operations, craft, and subcontractors in implementing effective corrective actions.
• Deliver Safety Training: Assist in and provide comprehensive safety training covering policies, procedures, OSHA/MSHA regulations, NCCER, SIMS, new employee orientation, and client-specific requirements.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-Level. Currently pursuing a degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Safety, or a related field of study. Knowledge of construction safety and current Federal and OSHA requirements is essential.
• Experience: Working knowledge of computers and experience with Microsoft Word and Excel. This role requires the ability to freely access all points of a construction site in wide-ranging climates and environments.
• Skills: Strong organizational and time management skills; Strong written and verbal communication skills; Good attention to detail, with the ability to recognize discrepancies.
• Bonus: Certification as a Safety Professional or Emergency Medical Technician is preferred.
