Revenue Accountant | Gusto

The Tone:
This is a full-time role at Gusto, located in the Denver metropolitan area with a hybrid work model. Gusto is dedicated to growing the small business economy by simplifying essential services like payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR for owners. As a Revenue Accountant, you will be a critical contributor to the Revenue Accounting team, owning the end-to-end revenue recognition process for the Gusto Retirement segment. This role offers an exciting opportunity to leverage AI tools and automation to make accounting faster and smarter, not just more accurate.

• Mission: This person owns the accurate and timely revenue recognition for the Gusto Retirement segment and supports new revenue products.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Revenue Ownership: Own end-to-end revenue recognition for the Gusto Retirement segment, covering 401K SaaS, IRA, AUM fees, and plan administration.
• Financial Reporting: Prepare monthly journal entries, subledger reconciliations, and supporting schedules for retirement revenue streams.
• Compliance: Apply ASC 606 guidance to complex arrangements, including variable consideration, contract modifications, and principal vs. agent assessments.
• Automation: Build and maintain automated solutions using AI tools, Python/SQL, or Excel scripting to eliminate manual work and improve efficiency.
• Collaboration: Partner cross-functionally with Retirement Operations, FP&A, Engineering, and Data teams to ensure revenue data integrity and support new product launches.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s in Accounting; 5+ years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years focused on revenue accounting.
• Experience: Proven track record building automation, scripts, tools, or workflows that reduced manual effort. Strong ASC 606 knowledge applied to SaaS, subscription, or fee-based models.
• Skills: Advanced Excel proficiency; foundational knowledge of Python or SQL.
• Bonus: CPA preferred (active or in progress); NetSuite or revenue subledger experience; Big 4 or public accounting background; fintech or financial services industry experience; comfort with ambiguity and curiosity about AI.
