Accounting Intern- Summer 2027 | National Interstate Insurance Company

The Tone:
This is an internship at National Interstate Insurance Company, located in Richfield, Ohio. National Interstate, a proud member of Great American Insurance Group, stands as a leading commercial transportation insurer, dedicated to providing comprehensive risk financing solutions across all 50 states. The company designs traditional insurance and innovative alternative risk transfer programs, specializing in group captive programs for niche transportation markets. This role is crucial as interns apply their academic knowledge to real-world scenarios within the insurance industry, gaining hands-on experience, learning about various departments, and contributing fresh perspectives that leave a tangible impact on business operations.

• Mission: To support the accounting department by assisting with entry-level financial tasks, contributing to various reporting requirements, and gaining practical experience in the commercial transportation insurance sector.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Banking & Treasury: Assist with daily banking and treasury management functions, including tracking cash balances in operating and deposit accounts and recording transfer cash activity.
• Investment Accounting: Support investment accounting and reporting areas by completing tasks such as posting transactions and income in the investment accounting system.
• Reinsurance Management: Complete various reinsurance reconciliations, along with processing reinsurance billings and payments.
• Financial Reporting: Aid with various SEC reporting responsibilities, including XBRL tagging and proofreading quarterly 10-Q filings and earnings releases.
• Statutory Compliance: Assist with statutory loss reporting (Part 3 Loss and Expense Reserves Schedule) and statutory investment reporting (Schedule DA) for one of the four statutory insurance companies.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-Level. Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in Accounting from a four-year college or university.
• Experience: No professional experience explicitly required; anticipated graduation date ranging from Fall/Winter 2027 to Spring 2028.
• Skills:
• Accounting Task Execution: Ability to assist with and undertake entry-level accounting tasks in areas such as prepaid assets, fixed assets, other assets, and other liabilities.
• Financial Reconciliation: Competence in completing applicable journal entries and account reconciliations.
• Data Processing: Skill in tracking financial data, recording transactions, and processing billings and payments.
• Attention to Detail: Capability to proofread financial documents and reports meticulously.
