Cost Accountant | Greenwood Homes
The Tone:
This is a full-time role at Greenwood Homes, located in Richmond, VA. This role is crucial for supporting the division’s financial operations by maintaining accurate job cost records, assisting with monthly close, and providing data for budgeting, forecasting, and reporting. It offers an entry-level to early-career opportunity to build a strong foundation in construction and real estate accounting within a collaborative environment where ideas are valued and your work directly shapes communities.

• Mission: Maintain accurate job cost records and provide essential financial data to support budgeting, forecasting, and reporting for the division.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Job Cost Management: Maintain accurate job cost records for all active homebuilding projects, diligently ensuring that costs are correctly coded to the appropriate project and expense category within the accounting system.
• Invoice and Purchase Order Processing: Systematically review and process vendor invoices and purchase orders, meticulously verifying their accuracy against established budgets and contractual agreements.
• Financial Reporting & Analysis: Prepare and deliver routine job cost reports and budget-to-actual comparisons for leadership review, additionally compiling supporting data for comprehensive monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting.
• Month-End Close Support: Actively support the month-end close procedures by preparing essential job cost reconciliations and standard journal entries, working under the direct guidance of the Vice President of Finance.
• Cross-Functional Coordination & Compliance: Collaborate effectively with the Purchasing and Construction teams to ensure all project costs are thoroughly documented and approved, and assist in maintaining audit-ready documentation and compliance with internal accounting procedures.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, for an early career accountant.
• Experience: 1–3 years of experience in accounting, cost accounting, or financial analysis.
• Skills: Proficient in Excel (including formulas, pivot tables, and basic financial modeling); strong verbal and written communication skills; meticulous attention to detail with robust organizational abilities; and solid analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Bonus: Prior experience in construction, homebuilding, real estate, or public accounting; familiarity with data analytics or AI analysis.
