Assistant Controller | Eversheds Sutherland
The Tone:
This is a hybrid role at Eversheds Sutherland (US) LLP, located in Washington, DC. The firm is part of a global law practice renowned for its collaborative culture and dedication to delivering practical, commercially informed legal solutions to a diverse client base. This Assistant Controller position is a valued contributor within the Accounting & Finance management team, playing a critical role in overseeing day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, and compliance to support the firm’s financial integrity and success.

• Pay: $140000–$160000 yearly
• Team: Part of the Accounting & Finance management team, reports to the Controller, manages 2 or more personnel.
• Mission: Assists with oversight of day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, and compliance processes to ensure accurate and timely financial data.
• Tech Stack: MS Office Suite (Excel, Access, PowerPoint), Aderant or Sage systems (preferred)
What You’ll Actually Do
• Supervision: Supervise, coach, and develop accounting staff, establishing clear responsibilities and promoting consistent performance.
• General Ledger Oversight: Oversee general ledger and balance sheet accounts, reviewing and approving reconciliations, journal entries, and related financial activities.
• Financial Closing: Manage the monthly and year-end closing processes, reviewing financial statements for accuracy, completeness, and consistency.
• Audit Coordination: Coordinate and manage the annual financial statement audit and other compliance audits, including preparing schedules and managing auditor communications.
• Tax Preparation: Assist in preparing and/or coordinating annual, quarterly, and other required taxes, such as K-1s, composite returns, and personal property tax.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a concentration in accounting. This role is at a management level, overseeing a team of two or more personnel.
• Experience: Minimum 7 years of accounting experience and 2 years of supervisory experience.
• Skills: Highly skilled in handling financial and numeric data, strong understanding of accounting principles, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, meticulous, organized, and advanced knowledge of MS Office Suite with specific proficiency in Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
• Bonus: Law firm or professional services experience, prior experience with Aderant or Sage systems, Master’s Degree and/or CPA accreditation.
