Staff Accountant I, Merchandise Accounting | Total Wine & More

The Tone:
This is an in-person role at Total Wine & More, located in Bethesda, MD. Total Wine & More is seeking a Staff Accountant I to join its Merchandising Accounting Team, playing a critical role in financial operations. This role is essential for ensuring the accuracy and proper processing of merchandise invoices, managing vendor relations, and supporting timely financial reporting, directly contributing to the company’s operational efficiency and compliance.

• Mission: To ensure accurate invoice processing, resolve payment discrepancies, manage vendor inquiries, and complete month-end accounting tasks for merchandise-related transactions.
• Tech Stack: Lawson/Infor

What You’ll Actually Do
• Invoice Processing: Review invoices for accuracy and proper coding, then enter them into an automated accounting system for payment processing.
• Vendor Management: Review vendor statements, resolve payment discrepancies, and respond to vendor inquiries to maintain positive relationships.
• Freight Payment Collaboration: Collaborate with the Supply Chain team to process freight payments, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely execution.
• Month-End Accounting: Complete required month-end journal entries and submit corresponding monthly reconciliations.
• Account Reconciliation: Analyze and reconcile accounts by reviewing open items, identifying discrepancies, and independently resolving issues such as write-offs or adjustments.
• Accounts Receivable Management: Manage A/R account activity by maintaining ongoing dialogue with internal stakeholders and ensuring timely and accurate application of payments.
• Process Improvement: Evaluate processes and transaction accuracy to ensure compliance, identify risks, and recommend improvements to workflows.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree or Associate’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field; entry-level career stage.
• Experience: Less than one year of accounting experience is required.
• Skills: Knowledge of basic accounting principles, ability to multitask and meet deadlines, proficient mathematical skills, strong verbal and written communication skills, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Bonus: Knowledge of Lawson/Infor or other automated A/P systems is preferred.
