TAX AUDITING ASSOCIATE | State of Tennessee
The Tone:
This is a full-time, hybrid role at the State of Tennessee, located in Jackson, TN, offering the flexibility of working from home 80% of the time while spending one day a week in the office. The State of Tennessee’s Department of Revenue is a vital governmental organization responsible for administering and enforcing the state’s tax laws. This entry-level position is crucial for individuals beginning their careers in tax auditing, providing foundational training and direct experience in ensuring tax compliance and accurate liability determination across the state.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Develop Expertise: Learn and apply critical thinking and problem-solving techniques essential for effective audit work and continuously pursue knowledge in new tax areas through departmental training and coaching.
• Manage Workflow: Plan and prioritize audit tasks, schedule appointments efficiently, and meet established goals and deadlines to maintain a continuous and productive workflow.
• Assess Compliance: Collect and evaluate detailed tax information, verify the completeness of records through reconciliations, and compute tax liability to determine tax compliance according to Department of Revenue policy.
• Report Findings: Prepare comprehensive audit reports explaining audit procedures and findings to taxpayers, including citing Tennessee state tax law and Department of Revenue positions, and effectively attend and participate in taxpayer conferences.
• Communicate Tax Information: Prepare and manage tax audit correspondence, respond to inquiries about tax liability and tax law for both internal and external customers, and utilize resources to identify potential audit issues.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-level position requiring graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in accounting or auditing, or equivalent qualifying professional experience.
• Experience: Professional experience in accounting or auditing may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis, up to four years. Alternatively, applicants with six semester hours of college coursework in accounting and three years of experience as an Accounting Technician or Tax Compliance Technician with the Tennessee Department of Revenue are qualified.
• Skills: Strong capabilities in active learning, critical thinking, reading comprehension, time management, writing, mathematical reasoning, and an understanding of economics, accounting, customer service, and law and government principles.
• Bonus: Applicants for this class may be required to possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license and personal vehicle insurance.
