Loss Prevention Clerk | Costco Wholesale

The Tone:
This is a critical, in-person role at Costco Wholesale, a large membership-only warehouse club known for its vast product selection and value. This position is vital for safeguarding company assets, minimizing inventory loss, and ensuring a secure environment for both employees and members. The role directly contributes to the financial health and operational integrity of the warehouse by actively preventing and investigating theft.

The TL;DR

• Team: Reports directly to the Warehouse Manager.
• Mission: Protects company assets from internal and external theft, actively reducing inventory shrink through investigation and proactive measures.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Asset Protection & Observation: Actively monitor the warehouse floor and perimeter for up to 8 hours daily, maintaining anonymity amongst members, to identify and deter internal and external theft threats and potential safety hazards.
• Shrink Management: Review warehouse inventory data, contribute to creating and executing action plans to reduce shrink, and retrieve concealed stolen items, moving product as necessary.
• Investigation & Detainment: Conduct thorough investigations into detected theft incidents, interview shoplifters when warranted, and detain suspects while adhering strictly to Costco procedures and applicable laws.
• Reporting & Legal Collaboration: Prepare comprehensive internal reports and reports for potential prosecution, enter cases into the Nettrack system, maintain evidence files, and provide essential testimony in court.
• Operational & Safety Support: Participate in training employees on loss prevention strategies, address potential safety and security concerns including hazardous material cleanup, assist with departmental duties, and provide high-level member service.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Comprehensive understanding of loss prevention principles, asset protection, and inventory management practices to minimize shrink and protect company assets.
• Experience: Demonstrated ability to conduct investigations, detain and interview suspects, prepare detailed reports for internal use and prosecution, and provide court testimony. Practical experience operating vehicles, equipment, or machinery.
• Skills: Exceptional observational and analytical skills to detect theft and safety concerns, strong verbal and written communication for reporting and inter-business exchange, adherence to Costco procedures and applicable laws, and the ability to maintain anonymity during surveillance.
