Revenue Accountant | Notion
The Tone:
This is a full-time role at Notion, located in San Francisco or New York City, with a hybrid work schedule requiring in-office presence on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Notion is building the collaborative AI workspace where teams and agents think together, consolidating knowledge, projects, meetings, and AI tools into one unified platform. This position is essential for supporting the monthly revenue close and ensuring ASC 606 compliance, particularly for usage-based and AI-credit revenue, as the company experiences rapid growth and increasing complexity. The Revenue Accountant will play a direct role in building an AI-native finance function, with their work impacting the speed of product launches and iterations.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Support: Ensure the monthly revenue close is processed efficiently and accurately, managing ASC 606 revenue accounting specifically for usage-based and AI-credit revenue streams.
• Maintain: By day 90, contribute to the month-end close process for a defined revenue recognition area, providing clean and audit-ready documentation and support.
• Automate: Within the first 90 days, collaborate with the team to generate and validate SQL queries, automate variance checks, and develop a lightweight agent or workflow to proactively identify discrepancies before the close.
• Reconcile: By the end of year one, consistently produce reliable and well-documented reconciliations and audit support, also contributing to SOX and internal control documentation.
• Influence: Operate at the critical intersection of billing systems, product usage data, and accounting judgment, directly influencing the company’s ability to launch new features and iterate quickly.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Possess three or more years of progressive accounting experience, including a background in Big 4 public accounting, and demonstrate a working knowledge of ASC 606 with a desire to deepen expertise in subscription and usage-based revenue recognition and contract changes.
• Experience: Proven capability in conducting detailed reconciliations, thoroughly investigating discrepancies, and determining the root cause of issues, providing clear and audit-ready supporting documentation.
• Skills: Comfortably use SQL to query datasets for investigating discrepancies, exhibit strong ownership over tasks, maintain meticulous attention to detail, and consistently meet close deadlines without compromising quality. Additionally, actively apply AI tools in practice to enhance the quality and reliability of analyses, checks, and close workflows, beyond just increasing speed.
• Bonus: Prior experience with financial systems such as NetSuite (ARM), Salesforce CPQ, Stripe, or Metronome; exposure to the complexities of usage-based or consumption pricing models in billing and revenue recognition; and experience with SOX or internal controls.
