Veterinary Extern – General Practice | NVA General Practice

The Tone:
This is an externship at Southlake Crossing Animal Clinic, an NVA General Practice hospital located in the Fort Worth, TX area. NVA General Practice operates a network of unique veterinary hospitals, all committed to a supportive environment, excellent medicine, and exceptional service to animals and their owners. This role offers veterinary students a unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of a general practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience within a supportive setting.

• Team: Works closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians and collaborates with the broader medical and support staff.
• Mission: To provide veterinary students with hands-on clinical experience and a comprehensive understanding of general practice operations and patient care.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Patient History: Gain experience in accurately gathering detailed patient histories for various cases.
• Physical Exams: Practice and perform thorough physical examinations on diverse animal patients under supervision.
• Treatment Planning: Participate in the creation of comprehensive treatment plans and the selection of appropriate diagnostic procedures.
• Medical Procedures: Observe, assist with, or perform dentistry services and surgical procedures as appropriate for your skill level.
• Patient Management: Contribute to the medical management of patients, ensuring their well-being and recovery.
• Communication: Develop and practice effective communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Current enrollment as a veterinary student in the clinical portion of your education, specifically in your 3rd or 4th year of study.
• Experience: No specific prior work experience is required, but an eagerness to learn and participate in clinical activities is essential.
• Skills: Foundational clinical skills relevant to veterinary medicine, including patient assessment and diagnostic reasoning. Effective communication and interpersonal skills for team collaboration and client interaction.
• Bonus: Eligibility for a travel/living expense stipend of up to $1,500 is available for qualified students undertaking externships.
