Digital and Public Affairs Intern | Monument Advocacy

The Tone:
This is an in-person internship at Monument Advocacy, located in Washington, DC. Monument Advocacy is a DC-based, bipartisan firm that specializes in government affairs, public policy and strategic communications. The firm partners with a diverse range of clients, from Fortune 100 corporations to trade associations, startup companies, and nonprofits, guiding them to engage effectively in today’s public policy environment. This role supports both the digital and public affairs teams for the fall, offering significant opportunities for the intern to work directly with clients and gain valuable strategic communications and design experience.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Social Media: This responsibility involves actively creating engaging content tailored for various social media platforms, along with managing these platforms to amplify client messages and public policy initiatives. The intern will contribute to Monument Advocacy’s efforts to maintain a strong digital presence for its diverse client base.
• Graphic Design: The intern will be responsible for designing compelling graphics and other digital collateral. These visual assets are crucial for supporting strategic communications campaigns across different client projects, ensuring a consistent and professional brand image.
• Communications Drafting: This duty includes drafting various forms of written communications essential for public affairs. This ranges from formal press releases and persuasive op-eds to media advisories and other short-form pieces, all designed to effectively convey client positions and announcements.
• Media Relations: An important task will be creating comprehensive press lists. These lists are vital resources, meticulously compiled for Monument’s specific practice areas, ensuring targeted outreach to relevant media contacts for client advocacy efforts.

The Must-Haves
• Background: This role is designed for a college senior or a recent graduate looking to gain hands-on experience in public and digital affairs within a professional firm. Candidates should possess a foundational understanding of the principles governing digital communications and strategic messaging, paired with core academic preparedness for an entry-level position in advocacy.
• Experience: Candidates must have demonstrated experience in professional writing, indicating an ability to craft clear, concise, and persuasive communications. Practical experience using professional design tools such as Adobe Suite softwares and Canva is required for creating visual content. Additionally, familiarity with website builder applications like Wix, or similar platforms, is expected to contribute to digital presence management.
• Skills: Essential skills for this role include a solid knowledge of various digital communications platforms and their associated strategies for effective engagement. The successful candidate must also exhibit strong discretion, particularly when handling sensitive client information and public-facing communications. Furthermore, the ability to work effectively and adaptably in a demanding environment, responding to the evolving needs of our clients, is crucial.
