As a critical support position for appellate attorneys and litigation teams, this role is essential for ensuring the precision, accuracy, and compliance of all legal research and appellate filings. What You’ll Actually Do
• Conduct: Conduct substantive legal research across statutes, regulations, established case law, legal authorities, and appellate precedent.
• Perform: Perform in-depth statutory analysis and deeper review of case law to directly support the efforts of appellate attorneys and litigation teams.
• Assist: Assist with the comprehensive preparation, organization, meticulous review, and ongoing maintenance of appellate briefs and all related legal filings.
• Review: Perform detailed citation checking, validate legal references, ensure strict Bluebook compliance, and review briefs for formatting, accuracy, consistency, and quality control.
• Support: Support attorneys by effectively identifying relevant legal authorities and providing assistance with legal analysis, various research-related tasks, and authority validation.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Requires a Law degree or current enrollment in an ABA-accredited law school, having successfully completed at least one year of study. This role demands a sound working knowledge of both federal and state court systems, comprehensive legal research procedures, and various legal research resources. Academic legal training and familiarity with appellate practice, legal analysis, and case law review are essential for success in this position.
• Experience: Requires advanced experience utilizing prominent legal research tools such as LexisNexis and Westlaw, demonstrating thorough knowledge of these platforms. Proficiency with citation review, citation validation processes, and adherence to Bluebook formatting requirements is mandatory.
• Skills: Excellent written and oral communication skills are necessary for clear and concise legal documentation. Strong legal research skills are required, including the ability to independently research statutes, legal authorities, and relevant appellate precedent. A strong attention to detail and robust quality control skills are critical for reviewing briefs, filings, citations, and all legal references. The ability to effectively support attorneys with substantive legal research, statutory analysis, and legal authority validation is also key.
• Bonus: Experience specifically supporting brief preparation, managing internal brief repositories, and contributing to appellate litigation work product is strongly preferred for this role.
