Intern, Legal Research | NASTAD
The Tone:
This is a part-time, temporary internship at NASTAD, located remotely. NASTAD is a leading non-partisan, non-profit association that represents public health officials who administer HIV and hepatitis programs in the U.S. The organization works to advance the health and dignity of people living with and impacted by HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis, and intersecting epidemics. This role directly supports NASTAD’s mission by providing crucial legal research and policy analysis to aid health departments in navigating federal, state, and local laws and policies.

• Team: Policy and Legislative Affairs Team, reports to Manager, Legal Research
• Mission: Assist the Legal Research team with implementing key activities under NASTAD’s health systems legal and policy portfolio to support public health efforts related to HIV programs.
• Tech Stack: Westlaw, Microsoft Office applications
What You’ll Actually Do
• Research: Conduct statutory and regulatory research on topics related to HIV and hepatitis policy issues and legislation.
• Development: Assist in the creation of resources, reports, tools/toolkits, and other materials based on legal research conducted.
• Maintenance: Execute amendments to existing NASTAD statutory and regulatory research products to ensure the accuracy of information.
• Oversight: Oversee updates to NASTAD’s 50-state jurisdictional analysis of HIV data privacy and HIV transmission laws.
• Support: Complete other duties and special projects as assigned to further team goals.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, completed a minimum of one year of law school, and currently pursuing a Juris Doctorate with at least one Legal Research and Writing course completed.
• Experience: Currently enrolled in a Juris Doctorate program with completion of at least one Legal Research and Writing course.
• Skills: Strong research, writing, and communication skills; familiarity and skill in legal research using Westlaw; ability to take initiative and work independently; knowledge of Microsoft Office applications; capability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines with attention to detail.
• Bonus: Preference for one previous intern or work experience in a legal office; interest in working with a national HIV/AIDS and viral hepatitis public health organization and with the communities most impacted by these epidemics.
