Advocacy and Legal Intern/Fellow | Center for Civilians in Conflict

The Tone:
This is an intern/fellowship position at Center for Civilians in Conflict, located in Washington, DC. CIVIC is an international nonprofit and nongovernmental organization with offices around the world working to improve protection for civilians in conflict zones. This role supports CIVIC’s US Program, focusing on civilian harm from U.S. military operations and arms sales, and advocates for civilian protection with the Executive Branch, Congress, and the public. The position offers an in-depth view of the DC advocacy landscape within a mission-driven organization.

• Mission: This role contributes to advocating for the protection of civilians in conflict areas by engaging with US government branches, military actors, and the public.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Research: Research and analyze existing and new laws and policies, particularly concerning US security assistance and civilian harm response.
• Contextual Analysis: Conduct research on conflict contexts that are connected to U.S. use of force or arms sales.
• Material Drafting: Draft policy analysis, advocacy materials, and occasional communications content for various audiences.
• Advocacy Support: Prepare for speaking engagements and actively participate in coalition meetings and advocacy efforts.
• Team Integration: Support general team tasks as assigned to advance CIVIC’s mission and operations.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree. This is an entry-level role.
• Experience: Currently enrolled in, or recently graduated (within the last 12 months) from, a Bachelor’s, graduate, or law degree program.
• Skills: Excellent interpersonal communication, strong qualitative research and analysis, clear and concise writing, attention to detail, working knowledge of Google Workspace and Microsoft Office programs.
• Bonus: Current MA/MS or law students preferred. Strong interest in US foreign policy, civilian protection, international humanitarian law, and/or international human rights law. Interest in national security law and/or legislation would be an asset.
