Legal Assistant | Sunrise Systems, Inc.
The Tone:
This is a contract position at Sunrise Systems, Inc., supporting a key client located in Phoenix, AZ. The client’s Appellate Services Administration provides an essential administrative hearing and review process for approximately 45 state-administered programs, covering benefit eligibility, licensing, and claimant fraud. This role is crucial for ensuring the accurate and timely processing of appeals and providing critical administrative and legal support to Administrative Law Judges. Your performance in the initial weeks may lead to a full-time employment conversion.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Process Appeal Requests: Review incoming requests for appeal, verify all necessary information, determine the timeliness of requests, register additional issues, and ensure compliance with noticing deadlines mandated by federal and state laws.
• Prepare Hearing Exhibits: Select and retrieve accurate exhibits, distinguishing between different programs and appeal issues, to create comprehensive hearing packets for Administrative Law Judges (ALJs) and all parties.
• Manage Case Records: Timely and accurately enter all case documentation, including notes and dispositions, into appropriate repositories, elevate appeals to the Board for Appeals as needed, and process requests for postponements or withdrawals.
• Support Legal Proceedings: Assist Administrative Law Judges (ALJs) with case research, interpret necessary procedures for the analysis of case files, identify and correct errors, and manage the scheduling of hearings.
• Provide Customer and Departmental Support: Handle elevated docket calls, assist customers with inquiries, and facilitate action on cases by uploading legal decisions and dispositions for the department.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-Level, with a preference for some form of legal education experience or foundational knowledge of legal procedures.
• Experience: Demonstrated ability to perform repetitive, detailed work with a very high level of accuracy and speed, managing multiple computer programs simultaneously and adapting to prescribed administrative procedures. Proven experience in customer service, effectively communicating with diverse internal and external stakeholders, and maintaining confidential paper and electronic files.
• Skills: Strong computer proficiency, including Google Suite (Gmail, Docs, Sheets), Microsoft Office, and Adobe Acrobat. Advanced analytical and critical thinking skills to analyze complex case information, resolve conflicts between competing data, and identify legal issues. Excellent multitasking capabilities across several platforms.
• Bonus: Mid-level legal background; familiarity with Arizona Public Assistance and Unemployment Insurance law, practices, and procedures; knowledge of the Administrative Procedures Act; and experience with case management systems such as Client, Clear2There, Guide mainframe, HEAplus, AZTECS, or CACTUS.
