Paralegal | Metropolitan Transportation Authority

The Tone:
This is a Paralegal position at Metropolitan Transportation Authority, located in Brooklyn, NY (130 Livingston Street), with a hybrid telework option of one day per week. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority provides essential transit services and operates a vast infrastructure across the New York region. In this role, you will be crucial in supporting the Legal Department’s attorneys, ensuring the efficient delivery of legal services across diverse areas like litigation, transactions, and authority governance, directly impacting the MTA’s operations and objectives.

• Mission: Support MTA Legal Department attorneys by providing comprehensive legal assistance across litigation, transactional, and authority governance matters.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Litigation Management: Manage and update Legal Department calendars and databases by meticulously reviewing notices of claim, pleadings, summonses, subpoenas, and court orders, ensuring all legal deadlines are accurately tracked and communicated.
• Discovery & Document Handling: Prepare draft responses to comprehensive discovery demands and carefully collect, review, and redact confidential and sensitive documents, including personnel, financial, medical, and labor relations records.
• Transactional Support: Assist attorneys in the preparation of detailed transactional documents, manage document workflows with internal and external clients, review surveys and title documents, and maintain template libraries.
• Corporate Governance: Maintain accurate corporate records related to the MTA board and its committees, prepare necessary public notice materials, and provide support during public hearings.
• Legal Research & Reporting: Conduct thorough fact research and assist with legal research using publicly available databases and Lexis-Nexis, while also preparing comprehensive status reports on ongoing legal matters for attorneys.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Hold a Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience from an accredited college.
• Experience: Possess a minimum of two years of dedicated Paralegal experience supporting legal functions.
• Skills: Demonstrate strong organizational, analytical, and quantitative abilities; exhibit excellent communication skills, both written and verbal; effectively collaborate with colleagues across all organizational levels and external parties; efficiently manage multiple short-term and long-term deadlines; and show proficiency in or the ability to quickly learn key Legal Department programs, including Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe, and LexisNexis.
• Bonus: Prior experience working within a law firm or the legal department of a private or governmental entity, along with familiarity with the MTA’s specific policies and procedures.
