Financial Analyst (Trainee) | State of Michigan

The Tone:

What You’ll Actually Do
• Financial Analysis: Provide professional financial analysis in support of various Michigan Department of Corrections programs.
• Budget Management: Monitor and forecast budgets, expenditures, revenues, and assets to ensure sound financial operations.
• Financial Reporting: Produce timely analyses, projections, and management reports leveraging financial systems.
• Data Evaluation: Systematically review, interpret, and evaluate budgets, expenditures, revenues, assets, and related financial data.
• Compliance Assurance: Support decision-making and ensure fiscal integrity while maintaining compliance with GAAP, State of Michigan Financial Management Guide, and internal controls.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Possession of a bachelor’s degree in any major with at least 12 semester (18 term) credits in one or a combination of accounting, finance, or economics. This role supports entry-level Financial Analyst (Trainee) positions.
• Experience: No specific type or amount of professional experience is required for the Financial Analyst 9 level. Progression to Financial Analyst 10 requires one year of relevant professional experience, and to Financial Analyst P11 requires two years of professional experience, including one year at the 10 level.
• Skills: Ability to perform systematic review, analysis, interpretation, and evaluation of financial data; proficiency in budget monitoring, forecasting, and reporting; understanding of GAAP, State of Michigan Financial Management Guide, and internal controls; and familiarity with SIGMA-Financial and Business Objects/Business Intelligence.
• Bonus: For classified state employees, an educational level typically acquired through completion of high school and specific experience as an Accounting Technician, Account Examiner, or Office Supervisor with the bookkeeping subclass code may qualify. College credits may be substituted on a proportional basis for up to one half of the required experience for higher levels.
