Court Attorney Clerkship | New York State Unified Court System

This is a temporary, two-year clerkship at the New York State Unified Court System, Appellate Division 4th Department. The New York State Unified Court System is a significant judicial body responsible for administering justice throughout the state of New York. This role is crucial for ensuring the accurate and thorough review of legal matters brought before the Appellate Division, directly supporting the court’s legal research and decision-making processes.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Legal Research: Conduct in-depth research and analysis of complex legal questions and issues for the court.
• Report Preparation: Prepare preliminary reports and confidential memoranda summarizing legal findings and recommendations.
• Decision Review: Review draft decisions to ensure accuracy and adherence to legal standards.
• Document Verification: Check for the accuracy of legal citations and confirm conformance with the official record on appeal.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school. This position is an early career opportunity focused on legal research and analysis within an appellate court setting.
• Experience: Admission to the New York State Bar, or the ability to gain admission within eighteen months of appointment. Practical experience in legal research and writing is expected.
• Skills: Advanced legal research capabilities, precise legal analysis, clear and concise legal writing, and meticulous attention to detail in document review.
• Bonus: An exceptional record of academic achievement, such as being a member of the law review, graduating in the top 25% of the class, or graduating cum laude or magna cum laude.
