Legal Administrative Specialist | United States Attorneys’ Offices
The Tone:
This is a full-time role at United States Attorneys’ Offices, located in Albany, Binghamton, Plattsburgh, or Syracuse, New York. The United States Attorneys’ Offices are a component of the Department of Justice, dedicated to upholding the rule of law and the United States Constitution. This role is vital to supporting Assistant United States Attorneys by providing essential legal and administrative services in various criminal and civil matters, contributing to the integrity of the American republic.

• Mission: Provide a wide range of legal and administrative services to Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) in criminal and/or civil matters.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Manage Discovery: Serve as the primary support specialist for managing incoming and outgoing discovery in complex criminal and/or civil matters, including coordinating with agency partners, reviewing materials, organizing voluminous data, preparing for production, and maintaining detailed indices.
• Analyze Evidentiary Materials: Analyze and summarize evidentiary materials, such as witness statements and documentary records, drawing upon knowledge of legal and factual issues relevant to the Government’s case.
• Assist Court Preparations: Support attorneys with depositions, hearings, and trial preparations by maintaining witness lists and schedules, drafting subpoenas, assembling and managing exhibits, and operating trial presentation software in the courtroom.
• Conduct Research & Draft Documents: Conduct complex legal and factual research using legal and non-legal databases in support of civil and/or criminal cases, and draft a variety of legal documents including discovery requests, routine motions, proposed orders, and notices.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Minimum a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field (e.g., Criminal Justice, Paralegal Sciences, Law) for Superior Academic Achievement, OR equivalent specialized legal experience.
• Experience: For the GS-07 level, one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level working in a legal environment performing routine legal assistance assignments that demonstrate a basic knowledge of litigative procedures. For the GS-09 level, one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level performing routine litigation support assignments requiring a basic knowledge of processing, review, and production of electronically stored information (ESI).
• Skills: Legal document preparation (e.g., motions, subpoenas), discovery management and organization, trial and hearing preparation (e.g., exhibit assembly, witness list maintenance), legal and factual research, and operation of trial presentation software.
