College Intern | City of Hollywood, Florida

The Tone:
This is a College Intern position with the City of Hollywood, Florida, a vibrant and expanding beachfront community. Situated in southeastern Broward County, conveniently between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood is Broward’s third-largest municipality, serving a population of approximately 153,000 residents. This internship provides university-level students with a valuable opportunity to apply their academic knowledge in public administration, finance, engineering, human resources, or related fields. Interns will contribute meaningfully to the community while gaining practical, hands-on experience across various functions of municipal government, assisting with a wide range of projects.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Public Service Engagement: Serve as a primary point of contact by responding to telephone and in-person inquiries, greeting visitors, and providing essential information to the general public regarding departmental services and functions, directing calls and individuals as necessary.
• Information Management and Research: Assist departments by collecting and compiling relevant information for various programs and projects, contributing to data-driven decision-making processes.
• Office Equipment Operation: Efficiently operate and maintain standard office machinery, including computers, photocopiers, shredders, printers, calculators, facsimile machines, and telephones with voicemail capabilities, supporting daily administrative functions.
• Records and Document Organization: Maintain comprehensive and orderly filing systems for a variety of critical documents, such as correspondence, forms, cards, receipts, permits, plans, reports, and other official records.
• Operational Observation and Learning: Actively shadow experienced staff members in their daily job tasks, observing and learning to obtain deeper insights into their specific roles, departmental processes, and broader city operations.
• Meeting Participation and Contribution: Attend departmental meetings, taking detailed notes, and contributing to discussions as appropriate, offering a fresh perspective and learning about collaborative municipal work.

The Must-Haves
• Background: This role is for a student or recent graduate. Candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED. Required academic standing includes being currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an accredited college or university, having completed a minimum of 36 college credits. Applicants must also have completed at least one year of coursework in public administration, finance, engineering, human resources, or related academic fields.
• Experience: This is a moderately complex clerical and administrative internship position focused on gaining experience. No specific prior professional experience is explicitly required, but the role involves performing a variety of clerical tasks, assisting with non-routine administrative matters, and engaging in moderate public contact.
• Skills: Demonstrated capability to perform various clerical duties, manage administrative tasks, interact professionally with the public, and efficiently operate common office equipment. Strong organizational skills are also essential for maintaining accurate filing systems and handling correspondence.
