Associate, Investment Banking – Power & Utilities | Scotiabank
The Tone:
This is a full-time role at Scotiabank, located in Houston, TX. Scotiabank’s Global Banking and Markets (GBM) operates as a leading Canadian Capital Markets and Investment Banking business, which has a growing platform across the US and Latin America with over a century of global operation. GBM provides clients with a comprehensive suite of investment banking, credit, and risk management products and services, designed to support their financing and strategic development needs, including debt and equity financing, mergers & acquisitions, corporate banking, and various capital markets products. This Associate role is crucial within the Power & Utilities Investment Banking team, a leading platform engaged with regulated utilities, independent power producers, private equity and infrastructure funds, and renewable energy developers, offering the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to live transactions and the strategic growth of the sector.

• Mission: To evaluate and analyze corporate client financial needs, develop business opportunities, and support transaction structuring and execution in the Power & Utilities sector.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Client Analysis: Evaluate and analyze the financial needs of corporate clients, including the comprehensive development and maintenance of sophisticated financial models.
• Material Creation: Create compelling marketing materials and presentations, including compiling data and assembling all necessary presentation documents for client and transaction purposes.
• Transaction Support: Support all phases of transaction structuring and execution efforts, covering sell-side and buy-side M&A, capital raises, and equity and debt lending, with increasing levels of responsibility over time.
• Business Development: Identify and develop new business opportunities with existing clients and prospective firms, applying product and capital markets knowledge to achieve financial objectives.
• Data Interpretation: Collect, consolidate, and interpret company and industry data, conducting thorough financial and written analysis of companies and their respective industries.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Business, Finance, Math, Engineering, Economics, Science or Technology. Core domain knowledge includes financial analysis, accounting, and financial theory.
• Experience: 2+ years’ work experience in Investment Banking or the power/utilities sector is preferred.
• Skills: Strong quantitative skills focused on financial analysis, accounting, and financial theory, including the development and maintenance of financial models; strong written and verbal communication skills for client presentations and documentation; excellent command of Microsoft Suite, with an emphasis on Excel; ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining high standards and excelling under pressure amid demanding deadlines.
