Security Software Engineer Project Intern (Network Security) | ByteDance
The Tone:
This is a project intern role at ByteDance, likely located in Los Angeles, CA. The Network Security team builds enterprise-level network security products and solutions that protect online businesses from cyber attacks. • Mission: Enhance the intelligent capabilities of the Web Application Firewall (WAF) to defend against sophisticated automated and application-layer attacks.
What You’ll Actually Do
• Project Participation: Engage in meaningful short-term projects, gaining practical professional experience and on-the-job learning within network security.
• CC Mitigation Enhancement: Research and develop automated mechanisms for dynamic threshold setting, using real-time traffic analysis to improve precision against HTTP flood attacks and reduce manual configuration needs.
• Smart Bot Detection Implementation: Implement advanced behavioral analysis methods to distinguish legitimate users from malicious bots by examining request patterns and identifying anomalies.
• WAF Optimization: Optimize the Web Application Firewall’s adaptive learning capabilities to minimize false positives and enhance the identification of evasive “gray market” activities.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Student currently pursuing an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or a related STEM discipline.
• Experience: Demonstrated familiarity with common security concepts, vulnerabilities, and exploitation techniques. This role requires a problem-solving mindset, a self-driven attitude, and the ability to work collaboratively.
• Skills: Proficiency in at least one programming or scripting language, such as Python, Go, Java, JavaScript, or C/C++.
• Bonus: Participation in Capture The Flag (CTF) competitions, bug bounty programs, or similar hands-on security challenges; published vulnerabilities (e.g., CVEs) or contributions to security research/tools; or familiarity with cloud, container, network, or mobile application security.
