Software Engineer Intern (Full-Stack Development Focus) | Muru Inc

The Tone:
This is an internship at Muru Inc, located in New York City with a hybrid work policy. Muru Inc builds essential digital tools for medics, aiming to revolutionize how medical decisions are made from often fragmented guidelines. By developing a “Siri of Protocols,” the company ensures medics receive instant, accurate answers, directly contributing to the highest standard of patient care. This role is crucial for maintaining and expanding a business-critical web application relied upon by major clients, including the State of New York and the Department of Defense. As an intern, you will gain hands-on full-stack web development experience, working closely with a small, experienced team and a dedicated mentor, seeing your direct impact on a mission-driven product. The environment fosters learning, focusing on professional engineering practices, from code reviews to safe production deployments.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Frontend Enhancement: Make substantial improvements and necessary bug fixes to a large, existing React web application, enhancing its functionality and user experience.
• Design System Contribution: Actively work with and contribute to the application’s design system, ensuring consistency and adherence to best practices across the user interface.
• Data Integration: Utilize a GraphQL API to efficiently fetch and manage data for various features within the frontend application, handling complex data models.
• Backend Development: Create new API endpoints using NodeJS to provide robust backend support for emerging frontend features and functionalities.
• Database Optimization: Design and implement efficient SQL queries to interact with and manage the application’s relational database, ensuring data integrity and performance.
• Quality Assurance: Conduct thorough manual testing and develop automated UI tests to validate application behavior, alongside creating unit and integration tests for the API.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Student actively working towards a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a similar technical field. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States.
• Experience: Demonstrated experience building web applications using a framework such as React or Vue (including through coursework and personal projects).
• Skills: Proficiency in JavaScript or TypeScript. Familiarity with SQL database queries. Conceptual understanding of REST or GraphQL APIs. Comfort using the command-line terminal for basic tasks.
• Bonus: Interest in developing both web UIs and API servers. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Eagerness to grow into a broader engineering role over time.
