Environmental, Health, & Safety Data, Emerging Talent Intern (Fall) | Metropolitan Transportation Authority

The Tone:
This is an internship at Metropolitan Transportation Authority, located in New York, NY. As part of the Office of System Safety, the Environmental Protection and Industrial Hygiene Department provides crucial oversight for all safety aspects across New York City Transit. This role directly supports the agency’s mission to maintain safe and compliant operations by enhancing its data management and reporting capabilities for critical environmental and employee health and safety programs. The intern will gain hands-on exposure to regulatory compliance, field assessments, data analysis, and the practical application of safety principles within one of the world’s largest transit systems.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Refine: Standardize and improve existing data trackers in SharePoint and Excel, ensuring consistent formatting, accurate data fields, and improved usability.
• Develop: Create new data trackers as needed to support the specific requirements of environmental and industrial hygiene programs.
• Integrate: Transfer and meticulously organize existing departmental data into Power BI to facilitate dashboard development.
• Automate: Build and configure Power BI dashboards to generate automated reports for safety and compliance metrics.
• Optimize: Review current environmental and industrial hygiene data workflows and recommend improvements to streamline tracking, reporting, and information sharing.
• Compile: Assist in compiling specific safety and environmental metrics as requested by the President’s Office.
• Support: Provide support to both the Environmental Protection and Industrial Hygiene teams with critical data organization and documentation tasks.
• Ensure: Help verify the accuracy, completeness, and consistency of departmental data across all tracking systems.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Matriculated student in good standing in an undergraduate program (minimum 2.5 GPA) or a graduate program (minimum 2.8 GPA). Preferred majors include Environmental, Health, and Safety; Public Health; Data Analysis; Business Management; Information Technology; Computer Science, or a related field.
• Experience: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is a must for this role.
• Skills: Possess strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills, with a keen eye for detail. The ability to work independently while being an active team player, and effectively prioritize tasks under pressure, is also required.
