Clinical Research Financial Analyst I | Atrium Health

• Team: Office of Clinical Research (OCR) within Research Administration, reporting to a Pre-Award Finance Manager or Clinical Research Administration Manager
• Mission: To provide essential pre-award financial administration and compliance for clinical research studies by analyzing documentation and applying regulatory guidelines.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Determine study eligibility: Reviews complex study protocols, sponsor agreements, and related documents to determine if a study qualifies as a “qualifying clinical trial” under Medicare and Medicaid regulations.
• Code procedures: Interprets American Medical Association (AMA) or Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) guidelines to identify appropriate Current Procedure Terminology (CPT) or Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) for tests and procedures required by research protocols.
• Conduct coverage analysis: Analyzes and interprets Medicare benefit policies, coverage determinations, and other applicable regulations to prepare comprehensive Medicare Coverage Analyses (MCA), determining payer sources for research costs.
• Facilitate budget development: Collaborates with Principal Investigators and clinical research teams to finalize the MCA and designate funding sources, and may develop initial study budgets for negotiation with sponsors.
• Ensure billing compliance: Develops OnCore Billing Grids as needed to support the clinical research billing process and maintain compliant billing practices.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or a related field; this is an entry-level position in clinical research administration.
• Experience: 0-1 years of relevant experience in clinical research or research administration. One year of business office experience in a healthcare environment or research office experience is preferred.
• Skills: Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, experience with computerized databases, word processing, and presentation software, and the ability to work independently.
• Bonus: Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Professional Biller (CPB), or Certified Revenue Cycle Representative (CRCR) certification.
