Digital Communications Intern (Fall 2026) | American Rivers

The Tone:
This is a part-time, temporary internship at American Rivers, located remotely in the United States. American Rivers is a national environmental nonprofit committed to protecting and restoring all rivers, from remote mountain streams to urban waterways, for both people and nature. With 50 years of experience, the organization is guided by the core belief that life depends on rivers. This role is vital for supporting the digital communications team, allowing the intern to contribute to impactful content creation, audience engagement, and multimedia communications that amplify the mission of environmental advocacy. • Mission: Support day-to-day digital communications initiatives, focusing on social media and digital engagement to promote river protection and restoration.

What You’ll Actually Do
Content Development: Support the creation of graphics, short-form videos, and other engagement-focused digital content.
Video Production: Assist with video editing for social media campaigns, storytelling initiatives, and broader organizational communications.
Written Communications: Help draft and edit blogs, captions, and various other digital communications materials.
Community Engagement: Monitor social media channels for comments, messages, and engagement opportunities, escalating questions or concerns as needed.
Performance Tracking: Support the Digital Team with analytics tracking and attend marketing and communications team meetings.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Current college student pursuing a degree, preferably in communications, marketing, digital media, earth science, environmental science/studies, public relations, or a related field. Candidates must demonstrate a clear interest in digital communications, social media, and environmental advocacy.
• Experience: Practical experience with video editing software and a proven ability to create short-form digital content suitable for various social media platforms.
• Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills, coupled with exceptional attention to detail; familiarity with major social media platforms and digital tools such as Zoom, Slack, Sprout, WordPress, Canva, and Adobe Creative Suite; highly organized, self-motivated, and comfortable working independently in a remote environment; ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
