Internship, Energy Optimization Software | Tesla
The Tone:
This is an internship at Tesla, with multiple locations possible including Palo Alto, CA; Fremont, CA; and Austin, TX. Tesla is dedicated to accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable energy through its innovative products in electric vehicles, battery storage, and related software. This role is crucial for developing and optimizing the energy management software that powers Tesla’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions. Interns are placed in positions where they will grow technically, professionally, and personally, working on projects critical to their team’s success.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Develop: Contribute to the development and optimization of real-time energy management solutions.
• Create: Develop production-level optimization algorithms to improve system performance.
• Enhance: Enhance the accuracy of Tesla’s battery forecasting models.
• Evaluate: Implement and evaluate algorithm performance using cloud-based tools that monitor the fleet.
• Apply: Apply machine learning techniques to improve system predictions and decision-making capabilities.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently pursuing an advanced degree such as a Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, Energy System Optimization, Operations Research, Data Science, or Power Systems Economics.
• Experience: Demonstrated experience in software development, including shipping production code, and familiarity with big data systems like Spark, Airflow, or AWS.
• Skills: Proficiency in several programming languages, with a strong preference for Python, alongside familiarity with Linux environments and version control systems like Git. Knowledge of optimization techniques, including solvers and stochastic optimization, and machine learning models, especially time-series forecasting, is essential. Strong problem-solving and effective communication abilities are also required.
• Bonus: A passion for sustainable energy and a commitment to advancing the field, with any previous experience in the energy sector being a plus.
