Multicultural Watershed Public Education Intern | City of Seattle

The Tone:
This is a full-time internship at Seattle Public Utilities (SPU), located in North Bend, WA. SPU is a community-centered utility focused on fostering healthy people, environment, and economy by managing water and waste resources for today and future generations. This role is vital for bridging academic environmental education theory with practical public engagement, promoting environmental stewardship and equity across diverse regional communities. • Pay: Undergrad – $22.56/hour; Graduate Students – $27.67/hour
• Team: Reports to the Watershed Education Manager at the Cedar River Watershed Education Center
• Mission: To connect diverse communities with the Cedar River Municipal Watershed through public education and environmental stewardship.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Interpretive Programming: Plan and deliver thematic public education programs that connect people to the watershed.
• Curriculum Design: Assist in developing lesson plans and creating educational materials for multicultural community engagement.
• Environmental Justice Application: Apply environmental justice and equity theory to community activities to ensure inclusive public outreach.
• Public Engagement & Tours: Engage in public speaking, educate various groups, transport community members, and lead tours within the Cedar River Watershed.
• Education Center Support: Support education center operations, manage social media, and assist with essential department tasks.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently enrolled as an Undergraduate Junior, Community College, or Graduate Student in Education, Ethnic Studies, Environmental Science, Recreation, Communications, Social Sciences, or a related field, maintaining a minimum GPA of 2.0 (undergraduate) or 3.0 (graduate).
• Experience: Experience in leadership, organizing groups/events, public-facing roles, or program delivery.
• Skills: Proficiency in social media.
• License: Possess a valid driver’s license to operate SPU vehicles for watershed tours, with candidates required to obtain a Washington State driver license on or before the date of hire.
• Bonus: Fluency in a second language is highly desired.
