About the Role
As a Water Engineering Intern, you will support the Planning & Program Management team within the Water Line of Business at Seattle Public Utilities. You will assist with technical data management, field-based inventory audits, and engineering research to ensure the continued reliability of Seattle’s water infrastructure.
What You’ll Do
• Conduct hydrant and water system inventory reviews and perform field-based GIS corrections to ensure asset data accuracy.
• Provide hands-on assistance for water system design and general engineering (PDEB) tasks, including field research, plan review and site observations.
• Support hydrologic and hydraulic modeling efforts to analyze water system performance and assist in updating existing models.
• Execute data entry and maintain technical records related to water systems and utility engineering.
• Provide general administrative and project management support, including research and assistance with financials and budgeting.
• Assist in organizing engineering data and preparing materials for project updates.
You’re a Good Fit If You
• Are currently enrolled as an undergraduate engineering student.
• Are specifically a Junior or Senior, though all undergraduate levels will be considered.
• Have a demonstrated interest in water system design, utility engineering, or municipal project management.
• Are enrolled on either a part-time or full-time basis and maintain a 2.5 GPA for the duration of the internship (except for summer sessions, must provide documentation of continued Fall enrollment).
• Have a current valid driver license from any state at time of application.
• Can obtain a Washington State driver license on or before the date of hire.
• Can provide proof of driving record by submitting your Full Abstract Driving Record as part of the application material, not older than 30 days from the date of application submission.
Bonus Qualifications
• Civil or Mechanical Engineering preferred.
• Have basic familiarity with GIS systems, hydraulic modeling, or general engineering research.
Role Highlights & Compensation
• Duration: 1-2 years
• Hours: Up to 20 hours per week during school sessions; up to 40 hours per week during summer/breaks.
• Schedule: Typically Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (negotiable pending school schedule).
• Primary worksite is the Seattle Municipal Tower (SMT).
• Salary: $22.56 an hour.
