Junior Ubuntu Engineer | Canonical

The Tone:
This is an early career engineering role at Canonical, a leading provider of open source software and operating systems. The position is remote, supporting Ubuntu, a widely used platform for enterprise initiatives like public cloud, data science, AI, and IoT. This role is crucial for ensuring the quality, performance, and resilience of Ubuntu’s software, contributing to its evolution as a platform that enables innovation globally.

• Team: Identified post-interview from Foundations, Server, Desktop, or Debcrafters teams.
• Mission: Design, engineer, package, integrate, test, and ship open source software for Ubuntu, ensuring quality, performance, and resilience.
• Tech Stack: Rust, Go, Flutter, Python, C/C++.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Develop: Design, build, and ship new foundational systems software and applications using Rust, Go, Python, and C/C++.
• Integrate & Ship: Package, integrate, test, and upload open source software to the Ubuntu repositories.
• Debug & Resolve: Debug software issues and design and deliver robust solutions.
• Document: Author and improve technical and community documentation for Ubuntu.
• Contribute: Engage with and contribute to upstream and neighboring open source projects.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or a compelling narrative about an alternative path, combined with an exceptional academic track record.
• Experience: Early-career engineer with a drive and a track record of going above and beyond expectations, suitable for new graduates or those just starting their career.
• Skills: Experience with Rust, Go, Python, Flutter, or C/C++; professional written and spoken English; excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Bonus: Familiarity with Linux distributions, system debugging tools and techniques, automation tooling and CI/CD systems, or experience contributing to open source projects.
