Student Intern – Library, Data, and Collections Assistant | Kansas Geological Survey (KGS)

The Tone:
This is an on-site student internship at the Kansas Geological Survey (KGS). KGS serves as the state’s primary research and information agency for geology and Earth resources. This role supports the essential functions of the KGS Library and Archive, ensuring that valuable geological data and historical collections are well-organized, accessible, and accurately maintained for research and public use.

• Mission: Support library organization, data entry, records maintenance, and collections to ensure accessibility and accuracy of geological information.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Library & Collections Organization: Assist with the organization of library, archive, and workroom spaces by sorting, shelving, labeling, and moving books, reports, files, and other collection materials, ensuring physical collections remain ordered and accessible.
• Data Entry & Bibliographic Records Maintenance: Enter, verify, and update bibliographic records in the KGS online bibliography and other internal databases, consistently assigning keywords and linking related records while reviewing for accuracy and completeness.
• Scanning & Digital File Support: Provide support for digitization projects by scanning various documents and managing digital files, ensuring they are named and organized according to established KGS procedures for publications, records, and collection materials.
• General Operational Support: Contribute to other KGS divisions by performing data entry, records organization, scanning, and similar structured tasks as needed to support agency and division priorities.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently enrolled student (undergraduate or graduate) maintaining at least 6 credit hours during the semester term, or meeting summer enrollment requirements.
• Experience: Demonstrated experience requiring attention to detail and strong organizational skills, along with a proven ability to follow written instructions and work independently after initial training.
• Skills: Attention to detail, organizational skills, ability to follow written instructions, independent work ethic.
• Bonus: Experience with data entry, spreadsheets, or record management; experience with proofreading, scanning, or file organization; or an interest in libraries, archives, research collections, or information management.
