Job Title: Public Works & Engineering Intern
About the Opportunity
This is a part-time internship position within the Public Works Department, specifically assisting the Engineering Division. The role offers a valuable opportunity to gain practical experience in various municipal functions related to public works and engineering.
Commitment & Flexibility:
- Minimum commitment of 20 hours per week.
- Flexibility with working hours is offered, with efforts made to accommodate class schedules.
- The internship is subject to ongoing funding and departmental need.
Key Learning & Exposure:
As an intern, you will receive exposure to:
- AutoCAD and its applications in municipal projects.
- Capital projects, providing insight into large-scale infrastructure development.
- The design and construction process, from initial concepts to project completion.
Responsibilities
The intern will assist the Public Works Department and Engineering Division with a diverse range of functions, including:
- Administrative Processing: Supporting day-to-day office operations.
- Permit Issuance: Processing transportation permits and assisting with encroachment permit issuance.
- Plan Processing: Assisting with the review and management of development plans.
- Document Management: Organizing and maintaining important departmental records.
- Field Assignments: Performing basic tasks outside the office, gaining practical on-site experience.
- Engineering Support: Assisting with various design projects and basic engineering tasks.
- Communication: Composing letters and reports as necessary.
- Public Interaction: Assisting at the public counter, providing information and support.
- General Support: Performing other related duties as assigned to meet departmental needs.
Required Skills & Abilities
Candidates should possess the following skills and abilities:
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in verbal, written, and graphic form.
- Ability to perform research and compile statistical information.
- General knowledge of engineering principles and practices.
- Ability to understand and interpret City Codes and Engineering Design Standards.
- Ability to keep accurate accounts and detailed records.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with city employees, other agencies, and the general public.
Desirable Qualifications
- GIS/AutoCAD experience is highly desirable.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current enrollment in undergraduate-level or graduate-level classes in a college or university degree program.
- Majors in engineering, public administration, or a related field are required.
License & Other Requirements
- A valid State of California Class C Operator’s License is required.
Employment Status
- This is a non-exempt position.
- Overtime at the rate of one-and-one-half times the hourly rate of the classification is paid for hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week.

Pre-Employment Requirements
Individuals selected for employment will be required to successfully complete:
- Background Check: Fingerprinting for all positions.
- Medical Exam: Required for full-time and permanent part-time positions (this internship is considered part-time, so details regarding the medical exam requirement for this specific role should be confirmed).
Both the background check and medical examination are conducted at the City’s expense by a law enforcement agency and physician designated by the City.
Important Note: Candidates currently working are urged not to resign from their current employment until they have successfully passed all pre-employment checks and received a final offer letter from the City.
