Engineering, Emerging Talent Intern | NYCT – SIRTOA

The Tone:
This is an internship at NYCT – SIRTOA, located in Staten Island, NY. SIR Engineering provides crucial engineering services for the seamless operation, capital projects, and third-party support of the Staten Island Railway system. This role offers the intern a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience by actively supporting lead engineers across diverse and critical railway engineering activities. The work directly contributes to enhancing safety, efficiency, and accessibility for the public transportation infrastructure.

• Mission: Support lead Engineers in maintaining, upgrading, and expanding critical railway infrastructure and communication systems.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Infrastructure Modernization: Assist with Station Rehabilitation and ADA Improvements, contributing to enhancing accessibility and modernizing facilities.
• Core System Maintenance: Support Track Replacement and Switch Replacement projects, vital for maintaining the safety and efficiency of the railway system.
• Equipment & Communication Upgrades: Participate in the Procurement of New Heavy Equipment and aid in the Radio Upgrade project, transitioning to a modern monopole backbone.
• External Agency Collaboration: Provide essential Third-Party Support, collaborating with various external agencies on inter-agency projects.
• Structural Integrity & Asset Protection: Assist with Bridge Inspections, assessments of Structural Integrity, and Structural Painting and Overcoating projects.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Matriculated in an undergraduate program in good standing with at least a 2.5 GPA AND/OR matriculated in a graduate program in good standing with at least a 2.8 GPA. Preferred majors include Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Computer Engineering.
• Experience: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Skills: Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills. Ability to work effectively under pressure and prioritize tasks efficiently in a dynamic environment. Keen eye for detail, coupled with the ability to work both independently and as an active, contributing team player.
