IT Analyst Intern | Compass Systems Inc.

The Tone:
This is an internship at Compass Systems Inc., located in Lexington Park, MD. Compass Systems is a federal contractor seeking support for its IT and Cybersecurity team during a crucial period. This role is vital for ensuring the company achieves Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) compliance, directly impacting its ability to operate within a regulated defense environment. The intern will gain hands-on experience in implementing cybersecurity standards and contributing to the security posture of a DoD contractor.

The TL;DR
• Role: Internship
• Location: Lexington Park, MD

• Team: IT and Cybersecurity team, reporting directly to the ISSO and Systems Administrator.
• Mission: Support critical system configuration and process alignment efforts to achieve Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) compliance.
• Tech Stack: NIST 800-171, Microsoft 365 administration.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Documentation: Work directly with senior IT personnel to learn and assist in documenting policies, procedures, and technical controls essential for CMMC compliance.
• Compliance Validation: Help validate configuration settings across various systems to ensure they align with CMMC and NIST 800-171 requirements.
• Security Reviews: Support the review and organization of system security documentation, including System Security Plans (SSPs), Plans of Action & Milestones (POA&Ms), and asset inventories.
• Audit Readiness: Assist with testing and evidence collection for control implementation, supporting the organization’s internal audit readiness efforts.
• General Support: Provide general IT support assistance as needed, which may include troubleshooting and help desk support functions.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field, indicative of an early career stage.
• Experience: Basic understanding of cybersecurity principles and fundamental technology specifications, with an ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
• Skills: Strong attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and strong written communication skills.
• Bonus: Familiarity with NIST frameworks or CMMC, basic experience with Microsoft 365 administration and general network constructs, understanding of access control concepts, or prior internship/IT support experience.
