What We Look For In an Advanced Functions Tutor

  • Advanced Subject Mastery:
    • Deep knowledge of:
      • Polynomial and rational function analysis
      • Logarithmic and exponential functions
      • Trigonometric functions and identities
      • Function transformations, composition, and inverses
      • Rates of change
      • Introductory limit concepts
    • Ability to explain asymptotic behavior, end behavior, and average versus instantaneous rates of change.
    • Skill in preparing students for calculus and university-level mathematics.
  • Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving:
    • Skilled at breaking down:
      • Polynomial factoring and division
      • Solving exponential and logarithmic equations
      • Verifying trigonometric identities
    • Ability to guide students through analyzing graphs for symmetry, intervals of increase and decrease, and concavity.
    • Emphasis on connecting algebraic representations with graphical behavior.
    • Relates advanced functions to growth models, periodic phenomena, and optimization scenarios.
  • Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction:
    • Familiarity with advanced functions curricula, including Ontario MHF4U and equivalent courses.
    • Awareness of common challenges such as solving rational inequalities, graphing reciprocal functions, and applying logarithm laws.
    • Adapts instruction using graphing software, real-world modeling activities, and cumulative review strategies.
    • Supports students preparing for university-level calculus and STEM programs.
  • Effective Teaching Methods:
    • Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with.
    • Explains material using multiple approaches.
    • Adapts instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
  • Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
  • Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
