Summer Intern – IT Network Communications Team

The City of Chesapeake is seeking a motivated Summer Intern to support the IT Network Communications Team. This internship offers students hands-on experience supporting network infrastructure, telecommunications systems, and IT operations within a municipal government environment.

The intern will assist the team with a variety of technical and operational tasks while gaining exposure to enterprise networking technologies used to support City services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Network and Hardware Support
    • Assist with maintaining and updating hardware inventory records
    • Help organize and clean IT equipment closets
    • Support patch panel cable management, labeling, and clean up
    • Assist with removal and installation of network equipment
  • Project Support
    • Provide assistance with IT and network infrastructure projects
    • Help document network environments and create network diagrams
    • Support infrastructure monitoring activities under staff guidance
  • Telecommunications Support
    • Assist with phone system upgrades and equipment staging
    • Support phone deployment across City departments
    • Assist with collection and disposal of outdated phones
    • Gain exposure to VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services

Technical Learning Opportunities

During the internship, students will gain exposure to:

  • Network segmentation and Network Address Translation (NAT)
  • Firewall security concepts and network protection strategies
  • Infrastructure services and network monitoring tools
  • Layer 2 and Layer 3 switching and routing concepts
  • Enterprise network protocols and hardware

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current student pursuing a degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Network Administration, Cybersecurity, or a related field
  • Basic knowledge of computer hardware and networking concepts
  • Interest in networking, telecommunications, or IT infrastructure
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
