The Tone:
This is an internship at The City of Chesapeake, located in Chesapeake, VA. The City of Chesapeake provides essential municipal services, and this role directly supports the critical IT network infrastructure and telecommunications systems that enable those services. This position offers students a practical opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a municipal government environment, contributing to the operational capabilities of the City.

• Team: IT Network Communications Team
• Mission: To assist with the maintenance, support, and deployment of network infrastructure, telecommunications systems, and IT operations to ensure reliable City services.
• Tech Stack: VoIP, Network segmentation, Network Address Translation (NAT), Firewalls, Infrastructure monitoring tools, Layer 2/3 switching and routing, Enterprise network protocols

What You’ll Actually Do
• Manage Hardware Inventory: Assist with maintaining and updating hardware inventory records for IT equipment.
• Organize Network Infrastructure: Support the organization and cleanliness of IT equipment closets, including patch panel cable management, labeling, and cleanup.
• Deploy Network Equipment: Assist with the removal, installation, and staging of network and telecommunications equipment.
• Support Infrastructure Projects: Provide assistance with IT and network infrastructure projects, helping to document network environments, create network diagrams, and support monitoring activities.
• Implement Telecommunications Solutions: Support phone system upgrades, equipment staging, and facilitate phone deployment across City departments, including collection and disposal of outdated devices.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Current student pursuing a degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Network Administration, Cybersecurity, or a related field.
• Experience: Basic knowledge of computer hardware and networking concepts.
• Skills: Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Bonus: An interest in networking, telecommunications, or IT infrastructure.
