Maintenance Worker | MoDOT

The Tone:
This is a full-time, career-ladder position at MoDOT, located in Salem, MO. MoDOT maintains the seventh largest highway system in the United States, and this role is crucial for its preservation and efficient operation. As a Maintenance Worker, you will perform essential duties related to the upkeep of Missouri’s roadways and facilities, directly contributing to public safety, service, and stability. The position also includes a temporary emergency operations adjustment when handling winter or other emergency activities.

The TL;DR
• Role: Full Time
• Location: In-person, Salem, MO
• Team: Maintenance Division
• Mission: Preserve and operate the state highway system by maintaining roadways and facilities.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Highway System Upkeep: Maintain state highway systems by patching potholes, filling cracks, and clearing debris from roadsides and ditches.
• Traffic Control: Manage traffic flow and establish safe work zones using signs, cones, arrow boards, and other control devices.
• Facility & Asset Maintenance: Clean, repair, and maintain state highway facilities, including signs, guardrails, curbs, gutters, buildings, and equipment.
• Vehicle & Heavy Equipment Operation: Safely operate various vehicles such as dump trucks and aerial boom trucks, and equipment like augers, trencher, backhoes, forklifts, and mowers, for tasks including material transport and snow plowing.
• Specialized Infrastructure Repair: Perform specialized tasks such as repairing bridge decks and drains, or installing and maintaining large overhead signs, potentially at heights using ladders or scaffolding.

The Must-Haves
• Background: High School Diploma or GED/HiSET. Candidates must possess a valid Driver’s License and achieve a passing grade on the written portion of the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) exam prior to their hire date.
• Experience: Successful candidates must pass the driving portion of the CDL exam within 60 days of hire, specifically requiring a tanker endorsement, no air brake restrictions (Class A or B), and interstate status (either Excepted Interstate [EI] or Non-Excepted Interstate [NI]). Employment also requires registration with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse.
• Skills: Demonstrated proficiency in operating various vehicles and heavy equipment, including dump trucks, aerial boom trucks, backhoes, forklifts, and tractor mowers, for tasks such as snow plowing, material transport, and right-of-way mowing. Competence in roadway and facility maintenance techniques, including patching potholes, repairing signs and guardrails, and clearing debris. Ability to implement traffic control measures, including flagging and setting up traffic devices. Capacity to perform significant physical labor outdoors, involving moving materials, using hand tools, and working in potentially hazardous conditions or heavy traffic areas.
• Bonus: Applicants who currently hold a valid Class A or Class B MO Commercial Driver License (CDL) are strongly preferred.
