Maintenance Worker | MoDOT

The Tone:
This is a full-time, career-ladder role at MoDOT, located in Rolla, MO. MoDOT is responsible for the preservation and operation of the state highway system, the seventh largest in the United States. This role is crucial for maintaining the state’s roadways and facilities, directly contributing to public safety, service, and stability across Missouri’s extensive infrastructure.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Maintain State Highway Systems: Perform essential roadway upkeep, including filling joints and cracks, patching potholes, and managing traffic flow by setting up signs, cones, arrow boards, and other control devices. This also involves loading, unloading, spreading, and hauling materials, as well as clearing brush, trash, and debris from roadsides and ditches.
• Maintain and Repair Facilities & Infrastructure: Conduct comprehensive maintenance and cleaning of state highway facilities, which includes repairing and replacing road signs and guardrails, cleaning curbs and gutters, and painting buildings and equipment. This role also involves servicing machinery.
• Operate Diverse Vehicles and Heavy Equipment: Drive vehicles to transport employees, equipment, and materials, and to warn oncoming traffic. Operate specialized machinery such as augers, trenchers, backhoes, forklifts, and various trucks including dump, aerial boom, bucket, and platform trucks. Additionally, mow rights-of-way using tractor mowers and hand tools.
• Support Emergency and Specialized Operations: Respond to winter and emergency situations by operating vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials. May also involve repairing bridge decks (full and partial) and drains, cleaning bridge bents/caps at heights using ladders or scaffolding, and installing or inspecting structural and large overhead signs, which can include pouring concrete footings, welding, and repairing break away signs.

The Must-Haves
• Background: High School Diploma or GED/HiSET is required. This is a career-ladder position offering opportunities for advancement, and MoDOT will bring candidates onto the team as entry-level, intermediate, or senior based on individual skills and experience.
• Experience: Must possess a valid Driver’s License. A passing grade on the written portion of the commercial driver’s license (CDL) exam is required prior to hire. Within 60 days of being hired, successful candidates must pass the driving portion of the CDL exam with a tanker endorsement, no air brake restrictions (Class A or B), and interstate status.
• Skills: The role demands significant physical stamina and endurance, including the ability to move materials by hand, operate hand tools, and perform stationary flagging. It requires working outdoors with exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and adverse environmental conditions, including risk of physical injury from carrying out duties in heavy traffic areas, on or near heavy equipment or machinery, and with hazardous chemicals or materials.
• Bonus: Applicants with existing valid Class A or Class B MO Commercial Driver Licenses are preferred.
